New York's new tourist attraction is not for the faint-hearted

A skyscraper in New York has unveiled a dizzying new tourist attraction - a glass-bottomed mirrored 1,000ft observation deck.

Summit, the sky-high experience spanning the top four floors of One Vanderbilt in Manhattan, New York, USA, welcomed its first visitors at a preview opening this week.

The attraction includes an outdoor terrace over 1,200 feet (364 metres) in the air, accessible by fully-transparent elevators that take visitors up the side of the building.

Each lift, known as 'Ascent', is 90 square feet making them the largest glass floor elevators in the world, and shoots you up 1,000 feet in just 42 seconds.

For those with strong stomachs, there are also 1,063 feet high, glass-bottomed booths overlooking Madison Avenue, called 'Levitation'.

Inside is the walk-through art installation called 'Air' where viewers experience a series of mirrored rooms that infinitely reflect views of the city through the walls, floor and ceiling.

Created by Kenzo Digital, the dizzying exhibit combines lighting, sound and production design to totally surround visitors with the New York skyline over the 91st to 93rd floors.

A Nordic-themed lounge and café called Après will serve snacks and cocktails, with interiors courtesy of architecture studio Snøhetta.

Summit is a $3.3 billion development designed by architecture firm Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) at the top of One Vanderbilt - the fourth tallest in New York City at 1,401 feet high.

It will open for visitors on October 21 2021, with prices starting at $39 for adults.
