A woman lost 10 stone by giving up her nightly bottle of wine after she nearly died from septic shock.

Jo Hurley, 50, says she went to the doctor in March 2018 to talk about why she was struggling with heavy periods.

However, during an examination of her womb, she says a medic perforated the lining and within two days she went into septic shock.

"I was terrified, I thought I was going to die," Hurley, from Harlow, Essex, explains. "I was diagnosed with sepsis, and my body started to shut down.

"I couldn't stop vomiting pure black liquid. My temperature was all over the place, I couldn't keep any food down. I was on a lot of antibiotics that caused me more sickness."

Hurley subsequently spent 12 months in hospital recovering from three surgeries, including an emergency hysterectomy, to remove the infection.

After returning home she turned to food, specifically cheese and wine, for comfort and and ended up reaching her heaviest weight of 21st 6lb, and a dress size of 26 two years later.

"I didn't put a filter on my intake,” she says. "I was drinking a bottle of wine and eating two packs of crisps a night. Next thing I knew I was heavier than the people around me.

"I went to a new year party in 2021 and realised all the other women had lovely slim figures. I felt disgusting. I knew I had to do something or I would never be happy."

In February 2022, Hurley needed an abdominal hernia removal surgery, which required her to lose weight.

When her doctor suggested she have a gastric sleeve to slim down, she declined and instead decided she needed to make a change.

"I nearly died from a simple check up," she says. "I didn't trust having another surgery. I wanted to lose weight naturally.

"Before my weight loss, I was drinking a bottle of wine a night. I've cut everything out of my life to finally feel myself again."

Hurley lost 10st in just 10 months, and within two years she weighed just 11st 5lb and was slipping into a dress size 14.

She says she lost the weight by switching to meal replacement shakes, going to the gym, and swimming as much as possible.

"I didn't want to risk getting sick again. I knew the gastric sleeve would be easier but I wanted to put the work in and lose the weight myself," she explains.

"The weight loss was my emergency. I never wobbled, and lost weight every week without fail.

"I've never felt better. I show off my body proudly. I'm so happy I lost it myself. I used to finish the night with a glass of wine, but now I just have a cup of decaf tea."
