Wayne and Coleen Rooney in planning row with neighbours over 'supermarket' mansion

Wayne and Coleen Rooney are locked in a planning battle after neighbours objected to their sprawling £20 million mansion in Cheshire.

The footballer and his wife purchased the land for £4 million in 2014 and have built a three storey, six bedroom mansion which they are set to move into later this month with their four sons.

But residents of the nearby village have objected that the property - which some have compared to an out of town supermarket or budget hotel from the outside - is bigger than was first revealed.

According to planning documents obtained by the Mail Online the lavish mansion and its outhouses boast an orangery, bar, TV room, snooker room, cinema and wine cellar, indoor swimming pool, hot tub, steam room and changing rooms.

There are two lifts inside the main house, landscaped gardens, a luxury car garage and stables.

Despite the original planning applications being approved by the council locals are said to be unhappy with how large and imposing the finished building has become.

One resident said: “The development is very nearly complete but it's a sore thumb on the landscape.

“The house which is taking shape wasn't what many people expected and is not in keeping with the local built environment.”

And new plans to build a barn for storing a tractor and hay in the grounds have met with objection from the local council and neighbours.

Ollerton and Marthall Parish Council spokesman said: “The application is located within the Green Belt where development is subject to stricter control and the policy focus is on preserving the openness of space, setting and rural character.

“Ollerton and Marthall is washed over by the Green Belt and careful consideration should be afforded to maintain the openness of space and avoid harm caused by inappropriate development.

“Given the scale of this development which has become much more visible from the road, any further impact on the Green Belt must be carefully considered.”

The plans for the outbuilding were resubmitted in February and are still being considered.

Rooney, 33, and his family are moving back to the UK following the footballers short stint playing for DC United in Washington. He is due to join Derby County in January.
