Stranded Seals Cause Havoc in Newfoundland Town

A herd of seals have caused havoc in the Canadian town of Roddickton, Newfoundland, obstructing traffic and blocking the entrances to homes and businesses after nearby waters froze last week, preventing them from returning to the ocean.Roddickton-Bide Arm Mayor Sheila Fitzgerald said the lost animals have been blocking roads and driveways. Local residents have been unable to move them since it is against the law to touch marine mammals.“They’ve been residents here now for one full week and it looks like they’re not going anywhere real fast,” Fitzgerald said in a CBC report.According to the report, two seals have been struck and killed by vehicles since they first arrived.Global News reported that the town council has asked the Department of Fisheries to return the mammals to the ocean. Department of Fisheries spokesman Lloyd Slaney said the total number of seals in Roddickton, initially suspected to be around 40, may be closer to 20. Credit: Brendon FitzPatrick via Storyful
