Melbourne Zoo treated their adorable Siamang gibbons to a surprise on Wednesday, October 24, to celebrate World Gibbon Day.Gibbon mum Sampit held her four-month-old bub Kemala, accompanied by dad Isidor, as the family tore open their special World Gibbon Day gift boxes and investigated their haul.Melbourne Zoo primate keeper James Chiefalo said baby Kemala’s birth in June had been of significant interest nationwide, given the species’ endangered status.Chiefalo said World Gibbon Day was dedicated to raising awareness about the plight of the species in the wild. Melbourne Zoo’s Siamang family are part of an international breeding program which aims to maintain a genetically diverse population of the species in order the fight against extinction.
