Demonstrators Oppose Duterte's Proposal to Expand Martial Law in Philippines

Protesters gathered outside the Philippine Senate on December 10 after the country’s president asked Congress to extend the declaration of martial law for another year.Rappler reported that the Senate and the House of Representatives had that day received a letter with the request from President Rodrigo Duterte.The military and police chiefs said martial law would enable them to move against “lawless violence” in the country’s south, according to local reports. Duterte first declared martial law for the island of Mindanao, when violence erupted there in the city of Marawi in May 2017.
