It's safe to say that most people think that it's really cool to hear parrots talk and mimic the sounds they hear around them. It's just not something you get to hear every day (unless you have a pet parrot), and it's surprising to hear just how accurate they can be when they're mimicking.

Chester is a Macaw whose mom takes him outside regularly. She shared a video on Wednesday, April 17th of the two of them hanging out, and Chester hears seagulls in the distance. Turn your sound up so you can hear Chester imitating the seagulls and laughing...he was really enjoying himself!

It's crazy how accurate his imitation of the seagulls is! He sounds just like them. I wonder whose laugh he's laughing...he was having fun! Chester's fans also enjoyed the video. One said, "LOL! He’s so funny and he knows how to make you feel good!" and Chester's mom replied, "Yes we so much enjoy our time outside!"

Which Parrots Talk the Most?

Growing up, my family had a parrot named Otis. My parents still have him, and he's in his late 40's now. He's like a sibling to all of us! Otis is an Amazon parrot, which are known for being big talkers. He has a huge vocabulary, not to mention all of the sounds that he can mimic.

Which parrots talk the most? African Greys and Amazon parrots are considered among the best talking parrots. They can learn a huge number of words and sentences and know when to use them. They ask questions, can name specific people or objects or places, count, they love to sing and dance as they do it or when music comes on. They can make requests, and even express their needs and emotions. It's pretty amazing! They can also get very loud and honestly, it can be overwhelming at times.

On the other hand, Macaws also mimic sounds, but they don't talk as much as some parrots do. Macaws and cockatoos can learn words and phrases and mimic, just like Chester does. They also may be able to learn a few short sentences, but they aren't considered the best talkers.

How do you teach a parrot to talk? You talk to them and include them in everything that goes on in the house. Otis called for the cats, barked like the dogs, rang like the phone, screamed (like us kids did), and even called all of our names and knew who was who. These were all things he heard every day. When we tried to teach him words, it didn't always work. Funny story, as teens we all tried to teach Otis cuss words, and he never learned to say them. But he did learn things simply by hearing repetitive words and sounds that happened in the main living areas where is cage was.

I think parrots make very cool pets! If you're considering one, make sure to do your research and talk to others that own the parrot you are thinking about bringing home. They're a fun pet but they can be a lot of work, too.
