Mum abandoned three children to go on holiday in Spain

A single mother who abandoned her three children to go on holiday to Spain has been jailed for 12 months.

The mum-of-three left her 16-year-old son to care for her two younger children aged under ten for one week.

Liverpool Crown Court heard how she refused to come home when social services called her and asked her to return, the Liverpool Echo reports.

The court heard how the 37-year-old was contacted after her six-year-old child told a teacher that their mother was away.

According to the Daily Mail, Judge Robert Trevor-Jones branded her "callous" and "self-centred" as she admitted two offences of child neglect and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

She had previously left her two youngest children in a car while she went to a gym and tried to cover up her behaviour, even attempting to persuade her ex-husband to say he was going to care for the children while she was away.

Judge Trevor-Jones said: "You were asked to come home at the earliest opportunity but you declined and remained until the expiry of that week displaying callous, self-centred indifference to the position of your children - a thread which runs through this case."
