The unlucky moggymay have used up one of its nine lives after it became stuck inside the walls at a library in the city of Murmansk in northern Russia.

Librarians noticed the problem after hearing the kitten meow from behind the plasterboard, and sent for the city rescue team.

They feared it could have died had it not been heard, but fortunately the head of the city rescue team Igor Osipov came to the rescue. Mr Osipov said the city has two dedicated vehicles for animal rescues.

It is believed that the kitten got into the library wall either through the ventilation shaft or through the basement.

Mr Osipov added: "Everybody deserves getting help. Animals can be injured or can be scared or aggressive."

Reports suggest the kitten has now been adopted.
