The restaurant chain, which was popular in the '70s with over 500 eateries across Britain, has just 80 left due to the popularity of McDonald's but now the company is planning "expansion and investment".

A spokesperson for Wimpy told the Daily Star: "We do have some exciting new plans in terms of continued expansion and an investment programme."

Another spokesperson said: "We do have many exciting plans under development behind the scenes.

"But these won't be for public consumption for until February – May 2018."

Wimpy is keeping things hush-hush but fans of the chain are already expressing their delight.

Jane Hope tweeted: "Far better than the other burger chains!"

Sammy Noble wrote: "Wimpy is my ultimate favourite food!"

And John Clarke says: "Great news. Love wimpy. Still some around but our nearest one is about 25 miles away. #wimpy comeback".
