Get paid £1,800 to move to this Italian village

Have you always dreamed of a new life abroad? Now's the chance to grab it as one Italian mayor is offering up to £1,800 to anyone who wants to move to a picturesque village in Puglia.

The pretty town of Candela has seen its resident numbers dwindle from 8,000 to 2,000 over the last few decades.

It was once a tourist hotspot known as Little Naples, but has apparently fallen off the visitor grid. Mayor Nicola Gatta is hoping to bring Candela back to its heyday and is offering the money in a bid to boost numbers.

Speaking to CNN Travel, she said: "I work each day with passion and commitment to bring Candela back to its ancient splendor.

"Up until the 1960s, travellers called it 'Nap'licchie' (Little Naples), for its streets full of wayfarers, tourists, merchants and screaming vendors."

The village is beautiful, with winding alleys, Baroque buildings, and bright white houses, all surrounded by green hills and forests. However, with the young people leaving looking for careers and futures elsewhere, it's in danger of becoming a ghost town.

Of course, there are certain pre-requisites, including the caveat that you'll need to get a job once you get there.

According to the Metro, the amount of money you receive also changes depending on how many people you go with.

If you're single you'll get €800, for couples it's €1,200, for three-member families it's between €1,500 and €1,800 and families of four or five get €2,000 (£1,800).

If you fancy the move, you'll rent a house in Candela and have a job with a salary of at least once €7,500 a year.

Speaking to CNN Travel, Nicola's colleague, Stefano Bascianelli, said: We don't want people flocking here thinking they get to live off the town hall's revenues, all new residents must work and have an income."

In return you can live the good life in a quiet safe haven where there has been no crime in 20 years (according to one local), and where you have some of Puglia's best beaches within an hour away.

If you're a foodie, it's also perfect for you as the town hosts an annual food and wine tasting tour called Taste Candela, which takes plane in the historic centre.
