Bar owner's TripAdvisor review shuts down customer's bad review

A bar owner has won a legion of fans for his sarcastic response to a bad TripAdvisor review which called a waitress a 'bully' after she had the audacity to ask them if they wanted anything to eat or drink.

Mike Atkinson, from the Oxton Bar and Kitchen on Wirral, shared a screenshot of the scathing review on Instagram and Facebook and set the writer straight on a few things he saw a little differently.

The anonymous user, known only as 'Wilkin 316', had complained he was "badgered" by a waitress while sat at a table - who was apparently asking them if they were ready to order food and whether they wanted more drink.

According to the Liverpool Echo , his complaint said: "Immediately we got through the door we were badgered about whether we wanted food or 'just a drink'.

"This badgering continued through our time here - 'are you ready to order? and 'can I get you any more drinks?'

"What they maybe thought was being attentive came across as almost bullying, at the least very irritating."

However after seeing the review online, the owner of the bar Mr Atkinson - who claims to have witnessed the interaction himself - gave his own response, to stand up for his staff.

He commented: "Oh Wilkin316, how will I ever survive if you never grace us with your loathing hateful presence again?

"I was there to witness the atrocious behaviour of [the waitress.] She greeted you and asked if you were eating or drinking.

"How dare she attempt to determine your needs? And when you sat there for 45 minutes before ordering your two portions of average chips and an omelette."

And when you sat there for 45 minutes before ordering your 2 portions of average chips and an omelette, I was as shocked as you that she dared inquire if you were ready to order more than once. I've reprimanded her severely and ensure she will never offer any of you anymore drinks again. Please don't die a slow and painful death. The bar owner hit back at the review, claiming to have witnessed what had happened when they'd come to the Wirral restaurant

The response has seen the bar flooded with comments and likes online, with many customers applauding the bar for standing up for themselves.

Joanna Karatas replied: "Brilliant! I absolutely despise Tripadvisor and all the vindictive Egon Ronay wannabes that contribute to it.

"Would never use it as an accurate pictures of any business. Well done Oxton Bar and Kitchen."

Richard Jackson said: "If you're a person who participates in TripAdvisor you're obviously a d*****d, it's just a place for people to moan. Your response is bang on Mike."

However not all customers agreed with the bar's approach.

Michelle Caplin-Duffy said: "Why call the person names? They're entitled to their review, it's how you reply to complaints which shows how professional you are and slagging them off publicly doesn't look good on you at all."

Rosena Kirke called the review "totally unprofessional", but Lorna Woods said: "Nah it's brilliant. Makes me want to frequent this establishment."
