The incident is thought to have begun when a coach apparently leaked diesel along the carriageway.

It is believed to have started leaking around junction 7 and the problem wasn't realised until the coach reached Fleet Services.

The spillage caused several accidents as vehicles skidded in the diesel, , Eagle Radio in Surrey and Hampshire reports.

Highways England described the spillage as 'substantial' and says it is currently in the process of an 'extensive clean-up operation'.

There is a large amount of congestion in the area.

Highways England is advising drivers to avoid the area and seek alternative routes - some of whom will be returning from holidays in the south west back to London.

There is no information as to when the road will reopen - or how bad the crashes were at this stage.
