Paris is the most expensive city in the world to buy a round of drinks, international research shows.

Families there will fork out an average of £13.68 for a beer, a coffee, a bottle of water and a Coke.

That is nearly 40% more than in London, which came ninth in the league table at £9.90 – despite a beer costing nearly a fiver in the capital.

Dubai, New York and Hong Kong were among the priciest, with travellers to the Middle East's largest city shelling out £8.78 for a beer alone.

Thrifty travellers should for South Africa, with Cape Town coming in at less than £5 for all four drinks and Cairo the best value of all at £3.92.

Wyatt Cavalier, of Honest Coffees, who carried out the survey, said: "Despite Londoners being hard done on the cost of a pint of beer, buying a cup of coffee in the UK's capital costs less than in Mexico City, which may well come as a surprise to most."
