A gigantic huntsman spider left a couple terrified after it climbed up the side of a house while they were having a romantic night in.

Lauren Ansell described it as the fright of her life after she and her partner nicknamed the arachnid 'Aragog' - after the giant spider in the Harry Potter series - because it was so big.

She said the spider prevented the couple from using a barbecue and got angry when they tried to shoo it away.

Her boyfriend tried to squish it with a glass door, but 'Aragog' managed to get out of the way and run off despite losing two of its legs.

Lauren, who lives in Mount Coolum on Australia's Sunshine Coast, told how the spider appeared on the wall on Sunday night.

She told the Sunshine Coast Daily: "(The spider) was preventing us from using our barbecue.

"We made it unhappy as we tried to move it so we could cook.

"My boyfriend tried to squish it in the door but the spider was smart. The door only claimed two of its legs and it dropped and ran into the garden."

Lauren joked that 'Aragog' had run off into the Forbidden Forest, which was filled with mythical creatures in JK Rowling's Harry Potter books.

Her friends were left stunned when she posted photos of the spider online.
