Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council's cabinet member for tourism, said: "Recognition of this nature is nothing new for Rhossili Bay, but it reinforces how lucky we are to have such a world class beach on our doorstep here in Swansea.

"It also shows why we include stunning images and footage of Gower's coastline so regularly in our outdoor and online advertising campaigns to encourage as many people as possible to visit Swansea Bay.

"Tourism is already worth more than £400 million a year to Swansea's economy, but recognition of this kind will further raise Swansea Bay's profile right across the world.

"This will hopefully result in increased awareness, visits, spend and jobs locally. Swansea is also embarking on a significant regeneration programme and raising our profile is essential in helping to attract investment."

A number of prehistoric remains can be found in the Gower area and at low tide beachgoers can see the remains of shipwrecks - including the wreck of Helvetia.

Walkers who stroll down the three-mile beach to the southern end of the Bay will be met by a small tidal island called Worm's Head which they can reach when the tide is low.

Rhossili Bay has previously found fame when it appeared in the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games and has also featured in TV shows including Doctor Who.
