Donna Cowley, 47, was pronounced dead in hospital after she was found "heavily bleeding".

According to the Mirror, James (Jimmy) Breaks, 80, was arrested on suspicion of homicide.

Cowley, who is believed to have been his ex-wife, died almost 24 hours after the alleged assault.

Breaks was said to have been watching TV on a sofa when police arrived at the scene. He allegedly assaulted one officer and resisted arrest.

A spokesman for the Guardia Civil told The Sun: "At 12.45am yesterday, local police in Mogan responded initially after being alerted to a 999 call about an alleged assault which had occurred at a property in the municipality.

"The victim, a foreign woman aged 47 who lives in the Canary Islands, was taken to Arguineguin Health Centre before being transferred to the Gran Canaria Insular Hospital in the capital Las Palmas where she died yesterday morning/on Friday morning.

"Up until now, and pending the official result of the autopsy, it has not been possible to determine the exact causes of her death, and whether her death is linked to the possible assault."

The couple were believed to have lived in an apartment complex in the holiday resort of Mogan.
