Left alone in the all-white apartment, which had been stripped of its furniture, decorations and even the pots and pans, Rafael began taking pictures of the only thing that she had left - the couple's bull terrier.
When the exhausted pup finally got tired of posing, Rafael took up a black marker and began to create a set of fun and inspiring backdrops for his canine model.
He made dozens of hilarious images showing Jimy Choo posing in police line-ups, karaoke competitions and even playing the piano.
The pictures, which he posted online, soon took off and have even inspired a book.
Jimmy Choo's Creative Director, Sandra Choi was so enchanted by the charming drawings that she commissioned Rafael to create a series of tongue-in-cheek illustrations to decorate a selection of the brand's accessories which were launched as a limited-edition collection in May.
Now 31, Rafael told the Daily Mail: "After my divorce all I had was Jimmy, and blank empty walls. I realised they made a great white canvas background for light-hearted pictures with Jimmy as the star."
He admitted Jimmy Choo is his best friend and that he loves spending time on his hobby and playing with his pooch.
Rafael also wants to change people perceptions that bull terrier are an aggressive breed and are really "lovely and inspirational".
