Alton Towers' Galactica ride has broken down as thrillseekers told they were stranded 80 feet in the air.

Disappointed visitors have reported they queued for up to two hours only to discover the ride was closed.

Brendan de Bruijn tweeted: "Just spent 10 minutes stuck on galactica looking face down at a pile of rocks about 25m below us... Not impressed."

Alton Towers has confirmed the Galatica is "unavailable" and Mirror Online has contacted the attraction for further comment.

According to the Alton Towers website, the Galactica gives people the chance to become a "space tourist" by combining a rollercoaster with a virtual reality experience.

It is described as providing a "blast through advanced space travel portal to another dimension."
