In a video posted on Drive Tribe, Hammond said: "Yes, it's true - I binned it. Again. The net result being I'm here, in a hospital in Switzerland.
"This is my knee, that they're going to turn from this into this – giving me a Swiss Army knee hopefully later today.
"I'd like to say thank you as well to James May, who smuggled a bottle of gin in for me last night. I shouldn't have said that out loud.
"And most importantly sorry to my wife Mindy and my daughters, Izzy and Willow. I'm sorry for being such a colossal idiot. More news later."
The 47-year-old was driving a £2 million electric supercar when he crashed through a barrier and fell down a hill in Switzerland.
It's the second time the TV presenter has escaped a terrifying crash. In 2006, he suffered life-threatening injuries following a high-speed crash.
