Heart-stopping dashcam footage shows a reckless driver swerving across three lanes of busy motorway traffic in a desperate bid to make a junction exit.

The shocking scene was captured by trucker Mike James as he approached junction 11a of the M5 in Gloucestershire.

His footage showed a black Audi A3 overtaking him in the outside lane.

Seconds later it suddenly swerves left towards the southbound slip road - squeezing between two moving cars in the middle lane.

The car kicks up a plume of dust on the slip road hazard signs and narrowly avoids the crash barrier, reports Gloucestershire Live.

The driver speeds into the distance in a desperate bid to make his exit

Mr James posted the clip on Twitter with the caption: "How NOT to exit a motorway!!"

The Highway Code states that vehicles should be in the left-hand lane well in advance of the junction if they want to exit via a slip road.

Drivers should signal left in good time and reduce their speed as necessary once on the slip road.

Jack Cousens, a spokesman for the AA, said: "The driver in question made a dangerous manoeuvre and was fortunate not to collide with anything.

The highway code says vehicles should be in the left hand lane well in advance of their exit

"The driver should have been paying attention to the signs and put themselves in lane one ready to use the junction, rather than swooping across lanes of fast moving traffic.

"Should you accidentally miss your junction the best thing to do is to drive to the next junction, use that exit and re-join the motorway heading back to where you wanted to be.

"You may end up being later than planned, but at least you'll get there safely."
