European city day trips are cheaper than UK train tickets

It's quicker to get to Denmark than it is to get to Norwich!

A new investigation into the costs of travel has revealed the day trip destinations in Europe that actually cost less than the price of a train ticket out of London.

Bookings website Skyscanner, which compares flights across destinations and airlines, has revealed the key European cities travellers can visit in a day, with six cities coming in under £60 return.

It comes as figures today reveal the cost of a holiday to some of our favourite continental hotspots has risen by £200 , as Brexit fears kick in, sending tickets and accommodation abroad soaring.

Destinations such as Billund can be reached for just £34 per person return and in just 90 minutes - that's less time that is takes to reach Norwich from London by train.

Meanwhile, fashion capital, Milan can be reached in less than two hours and for £53, only £9 more expensive than catching a train to Manchester.

Travellers looking for a quirky first date could even jet off to Copenhagen for under £60 per person, and seal their love with a named padlock at the walking bridge over Copenhagen harbour, Bryggebroen.

Continuing the last minute trend, you might want to tick Denmark off your list this weekend with a day trip departing and arriving on Saturday coming at £34.

Your outbound flight will leave London Stansted at 07:20, and arrive back in the capital at 22:30 - so you've enough time to grab two meals and squeeze in a visit to the sculpture park before your flight back.

Spontaneous travellers looking for a day out this weekend can unlock some seriously cheap tickets to Hamburg, Germany, if they book now.

A 07:45 Ryanair flight on Saturday 20 May, returning to the UK at 18:35 will set you back just £45 - enough time for lunch, sightseeing and a tour of Hamburg's Museum mile.

Have lunch by the canal or enjoy a cycling ride around Amsterdam this Saturday, with a return ticket for £64.

You'll fly out at 07.55 and return just after 7pm with easyJet, allowing you plenty of time to check out the Museum District houses and Van Gogh Museum.
