The silver Corsa got wedged on the steps in Plymouth at around 11am on Saturday morning.

A number of staff at the Tesco Express on Cobourg Street saw the car go through the gap in the railings.

Speaking to the Plymouth Herald, Tesco team leader Tony Johnson said: "They told us it was a 91-year-old woman.

"Her sat nav told her to go left at Tesco so she turned off the road at the pedestrian crossing.

"A couple of builders had to make a quick escape."

According to the Metro, Mr Johnson added that it wasn't actually the first time this had happened.

He said: "I have worked here for five years and it's the second time that I've seen.

"A couple of years another car got stuck there - it was exactly the same."

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall police said the incident was not reported as an emergency, and there were no reported injuries.
