But when he dropped out, with flights and accommodation already booked - the group hit on a novel idea.
They found another Joe McGrath on Facebook and messaged him to ask if he'd like to take their friend's place.
The message read: "Hi Joe. Would you consider coming on holiday with a group of nine strangers if they had already arranged flights for you and an all inclusive hotel?
"It's our friend Nathan's 30th birthday and we decided to throw him a surprise holiday break in Mallorca."
Joe revealed his amazing tale on Twitter
"Unfortunately our friend Joe McGrath can't attend, but we have already broke it all up for him."
After managing to get some last-minute time off from work, Joe decided he had nothing to lose and accepted.
The 26-year-old, who works for a radio station, drove down from his home in Manchester to Bristol to catch a flight with the group.

Posting a picture of the 'new Joe' on Facebook, one of the pals Lucy wrote: "When your friend can't make it on holiday so you troll the internet to find someone with the same name.
"Here he is the new Joe McGrath from Manchester coming on holiday with ten strangers! Hahaha doesn't know what he's let himself in for!"
When Joe revealed his tale on Twitter, some were skeptical.
In response, Joe produced a screenshot of his Ryanair boarding pass - and pictures of him with the group.
He even told one doubter how he had "burnt knees" as proof of his break in the sun.
When challenged by skeptics, Joe produced this boarding pass from his flight
Posting about his adventure on Facebook, Joe added: "Although I had my doubt if the offer was legit, I decided to take the plunge as my legendary boss gave me the time off work.
"I drove down to Bristol on Saturday night and had a mad three days with complete strangers that I think I can all my good friends (sic).
"What a mega group of people! I loved every minute of it.
"I want to apologise to my mum who thought I knew these people all along."
