Britain's best fish and chip shop has celebrated their award by offering their customers a fish supper - for just 1p.

Two of the branches of Papa's Fish and Chips in Hull, East Yorks., dished out 10,000 portions - costing them £40,000 - in celebration of the accolade.

They scooped the title after a fish and chip cook-off on BBC2's The Best of British Takeaways.

Dino Papas, who owns the fish and chip chain with his dad Sid and brother George, said the family were just here to celebrate their win as the BBC's best fish and chip shop.

He said: "It's not about the money for us, we are here to give something back and to celebrate being number one."

During the programme, which has a similar content to Great British Bake Off, owners Dino, George and Sid Papas took presenter and chef Tom Kerridge behind the counter at their restaurant, giving him and TV viewers an insight into how their award-winning food is fried.

And Kerridge was full of praise for their methods, saying: "I've just spent a couple of hours witnessing one of the most incredible food services I've ever seen.

"The standard is so incredibly high."

The Papas had family watched the show live on March 14, at one of their premises with special guests including John Prescott.

Dino promised he would hand out fish and chips for 1p if they won.

These pictures show the massive crowds attracted to the branches for their own taste of success - as they were offered a regular 10oz haddock and chips, usually costing £4.25.

The huge surge in popularity for the Papas restaurants even saw an alert triggered on Google - with the search engine picking up the hundreds heading for the bargain meal using its tracking software.

The win is an added bonus for Hull, which this year holds the title of UK City of Culture 2017.

They are particularly proud as the other two fish and chips shops they were pipped against were from the south.

Throughout Monday, which mainly remained sunny, the fish and chip family ran competitions for customers to jump the queue, which at some points reached a wait time of one hour and 15 minutes.

Customers had the opportunity to make the best batter they could or eat a spoonful of Chilli American Chip Spice to jump the queue.

Families, school pupils and pensioners were among those willing to wait in the queue to get their taste of Papas famous fish and chips.

Charlie Littlefield, 19, and George Pollitt, 18, both of Beverley, joined in the excitement.

Charlie said: "We've been waiting half an hour and would have to wait that in a normal chippy.

The giveaway cost Papa's £40,000

"We've come here for 1p fish and chips, why not, so we decided to get in the queue early. I've gone for salt and vinegar and George sent for chip spice. They're really good."

Connor Thompson, a sixth form student, had been waiting in the queue for 20 minutes at the midway point.

He said: "I'm here to get my penny fish and chips."

Connor's classmates said he had come armed with money for an added sausage.

At the beginning of the day, Dino said: "This is truly remarkable. We might need to get some more fish in. This is a true celebration."

Some people had to wait over an hour and 15 minutes for their food

Despite Hull FC players helping out with serving and a bouncy castle on hand to keep the kids entertained, the queue was too much for some people.

One couple left to visit neighbouring Lidl to buy some potatoes and make their own chips because "it would be quicker".

However the rest of the customers enjoyed themselves lounging on giant deck chairs and took part in the competitions alongside the bargain food on offer.
