Bristol is the top place to live in the UK, according to the Sunday Times Best Places To Live Guide 2017.

The city, in South West England, was revealed as Britain's most desirable location thanks to its opportunities in "creative, hi-tech and professional" industries, along with being "a small city that feels like a big city, handily placed for seaside and scenery, but hardly cut off from the rest of the country".

"Cool, classy and supremely creative" was how The Sunday Times described Bristol.

Home editor of the newspaper Helen Davies said the city "faced stiff competition from many wonderful places" but was a "worthy winner thanks to its ideal combination of extraordinary culture, impressive schools, buzzing culinary scene, exciting redevelopment and community spirit."

Other winners include Peckham, which was named the best place to live in London.

The Sunday Times says: "The area's story in a nutshell - the swift transformation of a crime-ridden, no-go patch of south London into a hipster rival to Dalston, and latterly a middle-class hotspot."

Ballycastle in Northern Ireland, Wadhurst in the South East, Frome in the South West and North Berwick in Scotland were also named in the guide.
