The woman was pronounced dead en route to hospital

The boyfriend of a young woman killed when their jet skis crashed on a dream Thailand holiday has been charged over her death.

Emily Jayne Collie, 20, was with partner Tommy Keating when the couple smashed into each other just a few metres from Kata Beach, in Phuket.

Harrowing pictures show lifeguards frantically perform CPR on the Australian tourist after she was pulled out the water unconscious.

She was pronounced dead en route to hospital after suffering severe neck and shoulder injuries.

Mr Keating reportedly told medics that the couple had collided after glaring sunlight on the idyllic tourist island had made it impossible for them to see each other.

But Thai police confirmed on Monday that they are pressing charges for causing death to others due to "carelessness".

"We don't yet know how the collision occurred," said Sanya Thongsawad, superintendent at Karon Provincial Police Station.

"We are now collecting evidence and will have to initially press charges (against Thomas Keating) for carelessness, causing others to die."

The young couple arrived in Thailand on January 26 and were scheduled to leave on Sunday, police said.

Sanya said Mr Keating is now staying at his hotel in Phuket and has not given police any details of the incident due to grief.

However, Mr Keating paid tribute to Miss Collie in a heartbreaking Facebook post today.

Alongside a number of photos of them together, he wrote: "My beautiful girl! Taken from us far too soon!

"I love you so much Emily and I wish I could just bring you back into my arms.

"I'm so broken and I know I'll never never be able to mend.

"Rest easy Emily I'll never forget you."

The pair had hired jet skis at 4.45pm yesterday before tragedy struck.

Mr Keating's cousin, Sean Lyon Smith, told the Daily Mail that the couple had been in a relationship for about two years and had gone to Thailand on a "dream holiday."

Lieutenant Patiwat Yodkhwan from the Karon Police told Phuket News that Ms Collie's parents were due to arrive in Phuket on Wednesday to collect her body.

In a statement, her family said: "Emily was our princess, everything shined bright when she was around,' the statement said.

"She was the most caring person and deeply loved her family more than anything in the world.

"She was looking forward to celebrating her 21st birthday this year and completing her pharmacy degree."
