British holidaymaker  fighting for life after being shot in Antigua

A British holidaymaker is in a critical condition after being shot in the head during an attempted robbery in Antigua on Christmas Day.

Chris Tester, from Devon, was fired at by a masked gunman during the attack at his parents' restaurant on Sunday night, local police say.

The 37-year-old - who had been v​​​isiting his family for the festive period - was rushed to Mount St John Medical Centre with "critical" injuries.

He is now reportedly in an induced coma at the hospital on the Caribbean island after receiving a "gunshot wound to the head".

Mr Tester's friends have launched a desperate appeal to raise £90,000 to fly him back to the UK for "urgent, life-saving medical care'.

They say that, because of the nature of his injury, they need to raise the funds and bring him home from Antigua as soon as possible.

Friend Charlotte Williams said: "Time is of the essence. Please, please can you help us to raise funds for him. They need to raise £90,000. It will save his life.

"Please help us perform a Christmas miracle!"

Mr Tester, who works at Birchell Marine Ltd in Torquay, was caught up in the attempted robbery on Christmas night, the Torquay Herald Express reports.

The attack reportedly took place at the island's Boxer Shack restaurant in Old Road, which is run by the victim's parents, Tony and Jill Tester.

The couple are well-loved members of the expat community there.

ABS Television in Antigua reported on its Facebook page that Mr Tester is in a "critical condition after receiving a gunshot wound to his head".

It said: "It is alleged that a man approximately 5ft 8 inches in height, slim built, wearing a black hoodie and mask, attempted to rob his family, when a struggle ensued.

"During the struggle he was shot in his head, and was transported by the EMS to the hospital. The incident occurred around 10:30 pm on Sunday.

"He arrived on the island on December 10 and was due to leave on December 29."

It added: "Investigations are currently ongoing into the matter."

Antigua police are also investigating an "unrelated" shooting at Golden Grove, during which a 42-year-old man was shot while sleeping in his home.

ABS Television said the incident occurred at around 3.45am on Boxing Day and that the victim was reportedly shot in the chest and groin area.

Crowdfunder and Facebook appeal pages have been set up to raise awareness of Mr Tester's injury and to raise money for him.
