Winchester is the best place to live in the UK for quality of life, according to a new survey from Halifax.

The Hampshire city, which is home to one of the largest cathedrals in the UK and Britain's biggest farmer's market, knocked the nearby district of Hart off the top spot.

It was named the best place to live thanks to its low crime, above average weekly earnings and good health. Women in Winchester also live two years longer than the average for the rest of the UK and residents of the city are among the most happy and satisfied in the country.

According to the Independent, 96.6 per cent of Winchester residents reported being in good or fairly good health, compared to the national average of 94.6 per cent.

Scotland's Orkney Islands were named the second best place to live in Britain, followed by Wychavon in Worcestershire, the Derbyshire Dales and Hambleton in North Yorkshire.

Martin Ellis, an economist at Halifax, told the Daily Mail: "Looking across a wide range of indicators considered by our research, residents of Winchester in Hampshire enjoy the best quality of life in the UK, benefiting from a combination of above average weekly earnings, low crime rate and good health. On the other hand, there is a cost associated with a high quality of life with house prices in Winchester 9.7 times the average annual local income - significantly higher than the UK average of 7.2."
