A British tourist has died after falling from a popular hiking trail while on holiday on the Portuguese island of Madeira.

The 43-year-old woman, who has not been named, was with her husband on the Levada do Norte when she plunged 300ft to her death on Saturday morning.

ITV News reports that she died at the scene at around 11.30am.

Emergency services recovered her body from the trail, which is made up of walking paths that follow 1,350 miles of mini-canals.

According to Madeira Island News, the woman is believed to have visited Madeira three times and lives with her husband in Austria.

The Levada do Norte is one of the largest walking trails on the island and leads hikers through the area of Boa Morte from Quinta Grande.
