Two men who were pictured 'surfing' a turtle on an Australian beach have been slammed as "complete idiots" by the RSPCA.

A status uploaded by a user called Ricky Rogers has been shared widely and sparked outrage on social media.

It shows two men holding what appear to be beer cans as they balance on top of the large turtle with the caption: "Surfed a tortoise on zee weekend.. gnarly duddddeeeee (sic)."

The status is tagged at Fraser Island in Queensland, one of the most biologically rich areas of the country.

A Facebook user who saw the status posted an appeal, adding: "When your brain is the size of a peanut, your thought process is ridiculous. Share this around and let's see if we can get this fool a nice hefty fine #fraserisland"

"Are people really that stupid?" Nathan Douglas wrote.

"This is appalling. Omg. So upset," Jeanie Nash added.

RSPCA spokesman Michael Beatty told the Fraser Coast Chronicle: "These guys are just complete idiots - there's no way they should be doing what they were doing."

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service later added that there was some evidence the turtle may have been dead at the time of the photo.

However, the men could still face a fine.

A spokesman added: "QPWS are taking this matter seriously and investigating further."

The image has since been removed and Ricky Rogers Instagram and Facebook accounts have been made private.
