These are the top destinations for 2017 (and one of them is in the UK)

Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2017 list has just been unveiled, and features an ancient Inca site, a volcanic mountain and... North Wales.

The region is number four on the top 10 has been credited in part to 2016's Year of Adventure campaign in Wales, which has helped show people what they can do in the area.

North Wales earned its place as a must-see destination for 2017, thanks to the region's reinvention, says Lonely Planet.

"Once upon a time the mountains and valleys of North Wales gave up a bounty of slate, copper and even gold," it says.

"Now this landscape, ringed with hills and rich with mythology, is a playground for hikers, mountain bikers and rock climbers."

Bear Grylls, official adventure ambassador for Wales, commented:

"The beautiful, rugged and wild terrain of North Wales lends itself to so many activities and adventures, and I was thrilled to find out it's been recognised in this way.

"The Bear Grylls Survival Academy is based on the beautiful Llŷn Peninsula in North Wales, an area very close to my heart and a place that's guaranteed to challenge even the most intrepid adventurers!"

The Lonely Planet says that what caught its eye is the way the former industrial landscape has been reinvented and re-purposed to create a series of truly world class attractions, from high speed zip lining and inland surfing to underground trampolining in a 176-year-old disused slate mine.
