The 27-year-old traveller was visiting Punakaiki and later tried to hitchhike south.
According to the Guardian, on the fourth day of trying, he allegedly attacked the Welcome to Punakaiki sign with a rock, threw road signs into a local river and abused drivers.
Local resident Neil Mouat told the newspaper: "Oh he threw an absolute hissy fit; he was lying prone on the road screaming that New Zealanders were assholes and he couldn't wait to get back to Europe."
Mouat, who branded him a "spoilt millennial," called the police and he was arrested.
According to Stuff.co.nz, the hitchhiker was charged with wilful damage and pleaded guilty in court.
He faces a $3000 reparation charge for the damaged road sign.
