Public swimming pools aren't generally known for their incredible beauty, right?

But did you know that there are some (yes, even in the UK) that are a downright treat to swim in, with views to die for, state-of-the art facilities and so much space that you'd be forgiven for thinking you swimming in a small ocean (and we're only exaggerating slightly there).

Take the North Sydney Olympic Pool (above) for example. The seven-lane swimming pool sits on the banks of Sydney Harbour, just below the iconic bridge.

If you'd rather indulge in a rural escape then why not wrap up and head into the Icelandic countryside.

The Seljavallalaug Pool is around and hour and a half from Reykjavik but the journey is certainly worth it when you lay eyes on the secluded pool, nestled in the valley of the Eyjafjallajökull ice cap.

Were you inspired by Rio 2016? Then maybe it's time to take a dip in Olympic history with a swim in Beijing's Water Cube.

The National Aquatics Centre was used in the 2008 Olympic Games and hosted the swimming, diving and synchronised swimming events.

These are just a few examples of some of the most spectacular swimming pools around the globe, take a look at the slideshow below and celebrate the world's finest pools in which to take a public plunge.
