A mysterious slimy creature found outside a remote house in a village in Norway has taken social media by storm, with various theories as to what in the world it could be.

Karl Ingar Fossbakkens says his wife were stunned to find the gruesome-looking thing outside their home in central Norway.

He said his wife asked him to go outside and remove as it was "nasty" but he couldn't resist taking some pictures of it first.

The creature is around 25cm long and has a transparent body.

So what is it? Some online users suggested it was the remains of a bat, but one expert thinks it's actually the remains of a partially digested giant frog.

Zoologist Roar Solheim, from the Agder Nature Museum, suggested it was coughed up by something like a heron.

According to news.com.au, he said: "The feet belong to a frog or a toad. As far as I know there is no other animal that has such feet.

"The hind legs are folded forward, which looks strange.

The Mirror reports that Roar also said: "The body and the head look very smooth, and it may indicate that it has been eaten and then regurgitated again.

"The surface may look like that because the frog has been in contact with the bird's stomach acid."
