Princess Charlotte is set to go on her first royal tour next month with her parents Kate Middleton and Prince William.

The young princess and her brother Prince George will head off on an eight-day trip to Canada after the family were invited to visit by the country's Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau.

It will be the first official overseas trip as a family of four.

The trip will be the first time Kate and Wills return to Canada since their official trip back in 2011, when they visited Ottawa, Calgary and Prince Edward Island.

According to the Telegraph, a Kensington Palace spokesman said: "The Duke and Duchess hold very happy memories from their visit in 2011 – their first overseas tour as a married couple.

"They are really looking forward to seeing other parts of this beautiful country and having the opportunity to meet many more Canadians along the way."

It is hoped the trip will favourably boost the popularity of the monarchy over republicanism in one of the most important Commonwealth realms.

The Sunday Times reports that Canadians are becoming increasingly divided on the future of the monarchy after the Queen's reign.

The paper reports that a recent poll by the Angus Reid Institute found that 64% of Canadians wanted to continue to recognise the Queen as their monarch but only 46% wanted to do so for the Prince of Wales.

Only 42% agreed that Canada should remain a constitutional monarchy "for generations to come".

During the trip in September, the royals are set to visit the Yukon territory, and British Columbia, including stops at Vancouver and the mountain and skiing resort of Whistler - a favourite with a host of celebrities.
