North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has closed an amusement park in capital city Pyongyang because it reminds him of his uncle Jang Song-thaek who oversaw the project but was executed in 2013 for treason.

Pyongyang Folk Village features miniature versions of the city's buildings and was completed in 2012, reportedly costing millions of dollars to build.

Jang was described as "despicable human scum ... worse than a dog" when the official KCNA news agency announced his death.

According to the Guardian, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported that Kim ordered "Mini Pyongyang" to be dismantled as it reminded him of his uncle.

A source said: "Whenever Kim passed by Pyongyang Folk Village, he complained it brought Jang back to his mind."

Another source said brochures promoting the model village had been shredded.

But Nick Bonner, director of Koryo Tours, a China-based travel agency that specialises in visits to North Korea, said the company had been told the closure was temporary.

"We were told last week it's closed for renovation," he told AFP.

Channel News Asia reports that tourists to the amusement park are rare as most visitors prefer to see the real Pyongyang.

The village features replicas of buildings and monuments such as the Juche (self-independence) tower topped with the torch of revolution.
