Tourists in Western Australia were treated to the extraordinary sight of over 70 tiger sharks eating away at a dead humpback whale on Friday.

The feeding frenzy in Shark Bay was witnessed by two boats of people and captured by island tour company Eco Abrolhos, which used a drone and GoPro.

Sharing the amazing video on Facebook, Eco Abrolhos wrote: "Passengers on our 14 day Geraldton to Broome and everywhere in between were treated to an unexpected phenomena whilst cruising inside Dirk Hartog Island. Something to show and tell the Grandchildren."

Holidaymaker Neil Edwards, who was on one of the boats, wrote: "This was truly amazing to witness this act of nature. The drone and GoPro footage far exceeded my videos and pictures. Thank you Jay and crew for taking us here to view this incredible feeding frenzy."

The drone footage shows the sharks circling the whale carcass and biting off chunks of flesh, leaving the crystal-clear turquoise water a dark shade of red.

It is not clear whether the whale died from natural causes or was killed by the sharks.

Jay Cox, from cruise operator for Eco Abrolhos, told Daily Mail Australia: "We went round for two hours right up close and personal you could reach over and touch them (the sharks). They were very docile and very well fed, we counted around 70 tiger sharks of all shapes and sizes. Some of them were up to six metres long."

He added that the whale probably became breached and drowned in the shallow water.
