Jennifer Lawrence has revealed that she once had to spend time in an airport jail after lying about her visa status on a trip to London.

The famous actress appeared on The Graham Norton Show where she admitted being advised to say she was travelling for leisure and not work.

Lawrence had made the trip from America to audition for X-Men: First Class but her passport was expiring soon.

Speaking on the show, she said: "They were like, 'Whatever you do, don't tell them that you're here for work, because they'll ask for a work visa; say you're here for pleasure.'"

"And I'm like, 'Oh my! Good God! I have to lie to a customs officer.'

The 25-year-old decided to say she was visiting for her brother's wedding.

"I get there and he's like, 'Business or pleasure?' 'Pleasure.'

"'What are you doing for pleasure?' 'My brother's getting married.' 'Where's your brother getting married?' 'Wimbledon.' 'Is he American?' 'Yes.'"

She eventually told the truth when the interrogation got too much and custom officers made some calls to verify her employment.

As this took several hours, J-Law was forced to wait in an airport jail.

"I had to sit in a tiny little jail for like five hours while they called my employer," she said. "I felt tiny."
