These hot air balloon riders in Berlin got more than they bargained for when they took to the skies.

What was supposed to be a pleasurable trip turned into a nightmare as the balloon was battered by strong winds, tossing the petrified tourists around in the air.

Normally the helium balloon, which is tethered to the ground by steel ropes, lifts passengers up to 150 metres for panoramic views of the German city.

But the 19 passengers on this trip didn't really get much of a chance to enjoy the views they had hoped for.

To avoid falling out, they had to crouch inside the basket as it was buffeted about.

Luckily no one was injured during the terrifying incident - although several of the passengers on board were treated for shock when the balloon eventually managed to land.

Local news sites have reported that German police are considering taking action against the ride operators for negligent injury.

Last year a man in Calgary, Canada was arrested for trying to create a hot air balloon of his own with a lawn chair attached to 150 helium balloons.

Daniel Boria claimed the stunt was done to promote a cleaning company.

Unfortunately he wasn't quite able to land the bizarre contraption and had to jump ship after about 20 minutes in the air.

Although he release a parachute when he jumped he apparently sustained injuries to both of his ankles on landing.
