Missy's owner Richard McCormick said he rushed her to the vet when he saw she was injured, but there was nothing they could do.

Speaking to the DailyTelegraph, he said: "Missy was always at the bus stop, everyone that caught a bus from there knew her.

"Missy loved the attention and was so friendly towards people who were waiting for the bus - I'm sure people liked stroking her as they waited."

'Bus Stop Cat' was so popular she even had her own Facebook page.

A host of people have taken to social media to share their sadness at her passing.

A JustGiving page has been set up to raise £500 for a plaque to be erected at the bus stop in honour of the cat. At the time of writing it had reached over £2000.

Users on the JustGiving page have commented on the sad incident. One said: "So sorry that some sick thugs thought it ok to hurt this beautiful little baby who did nothing other than show love, affection and trust to humans. I hope they get a taste of their own medicine."

Another wrote: "I cannot believe that our so called humanity is capable of this atrocity. I hope the degenerate bottom feeding scum responsible are afforded appropriate justice. An eye for an eye!RIP Missy.x"

And one user said: "Just read this story on Facebook and it's made me so sad; never heard of this wee cat before but what those thugs did is beyond heartless to such a trusting wee animal."

Police are looking for information on what happened to Missy.

According to the Mirror, a Hampshire Police spokeswoman said: "We received a report of criminal damage on January 30.

"This related to a cat which had sustained injuries consistent with an attack. The cat was subsequently put to sleep.

"It is believed the incident took place between January 28 and January 29.

"Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, quoting 44160045690."
