A nine-year-old girl has died following a motorway crash on the M9 in West Lothian on Friday.

The toddler, along with a man and woman, were killed in the collision and three people are in hospital.

According to The Edinburgh Reporter, the crash happened between Polmont and Linlithgow at 9pm.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Police Scotland can confirm that a third person has died following a serious road traffic collision on the M9 on Friday 29 January.

"Sadly a nine-year-old girl has passed away.

"A 37-year-old woman and 42-year-old man were pronounced dead at the scene on Friday night."

The spokesman added: "A further two people remain in a critical condition in the Forth Valley Royal Hospital and another who was transferred to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow is described as serious."

STV reports that the incident involved a silver Mercedes car and a white Vauxhall van.

Any witnesses to the incident are asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.
