Tweeting a picture of Britain from space, he wrote: "Hey, I recognise that place!"

Peake has been in space for 47 days, taking part in a space walk mission to replace a faulty solar unit on the aircraft and transferring cargo.

He is the first British astronaut on the ISS.

According to the BBC, he is also asking schoolchildren to help him with a scientific experiment which will see pupils plant rocket seeds that have been in orbit with him and compare their growth to rocket plants that have stayed on Earth.

The study is to help find out whether we can sustain human life in space through the production of our own food.
