A stray dog had a painful run-in with a porcupine leaving the boxer-mix with hundreds of quills stuck in its face.

One-year-old Canello was pictured with the spines lodged in his snout, tongue, neck, eyelids and paws after the attack.

KDVR reports that Sean Pace found the dog curled up on his porch in Aurora, Colorado, on Friday morning.

"I saw all this white all over his face, and I thought maybe he was frosted," he said.

After taking a closer look, he realised it was porcupine quills covering the dog.

"I was trying to check his tag and he wasn't happy about that at first," Pace said. "We managed to get him some food. Got the police called, and managed to get him wrapped up in a blanket finally."

Parker Police Department wrote on Facebook: "Canello has had a rough couple of weeks. He was first sighted running around on December 24th of last year. He was spotted again on Wednesday, January 6th, in Douglas County.

"Yesterday, one of our Animal Control Officers was able to catch him and get him to the buddy centre. Unfortunately, it was after he had a pretty rough run-in with a porcupine.

"Canello is going to need some time to heal. After that he is going to need a new family and home to show him the love he has missed out on these past few weeks."
