Bizarre waves of 'snowballs' were filmed in a lake in Sebago, Maine on Wednesday baffling social media users across America.

The otherworldly sight appeared as a carpet of ice balls on the cold lake.

Artist David Allen, of Stone Point Studio, posted the video on Facebook and wrote: "Waves of snowballs. This was one of the most awesome natural events I have ever seen!"

Commenting on the video, he added: "There was NO ice on the lake, so it isn't lake ice. In fact it has been very warm, right up until we got this snow/sleet/freezing rain storm. It was very cold when I shot this, maybe around 20 degrees. I fished out a couple of the balls, and sure enough, they broke apart and were very slushy, definitely not ice."

The Weather Channel says the winter phenomenon happens when wind-driven waves roll over tiny bits of ice, then new layers form and freeze. The ice chips then grow into ice balls.
