The UK airport with the most delays has been named has London Heathrow in a new survey.

Using data for October 2015 from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, Stratosjets.com compiled stats on flight delays and cancellations at different airports and different airlines.

Maintenance problems, security issues, bad weather, air traffic control, and late arrival flights all contribute towards delays.

London Heathrow, Europe's busiest airport, suffered 4,072 delayed flights and 336 cancelled flights in October, with heavy fog at least partially to blame.

This made it the airport with the most delays in the UK and in Europe as a whole.

In comparison, London Gatwick suffered 2,172 delays and 129 cancellation, while Manchester Airport had 985 delays and 142 cancellations.

Meanwhile, looking at airlines, German airline Lufthansa led the way in flight cancellations, with more than 12 times as many cancelled flights as any other airline, which was undoubtedly affected by recent strikes over pensions and retirement benefits.

British Airways came third in the list, while Easyjet came in at eighth position.

Sratosjets adds: "Generally, airports with the most cancellations also saw high numbers of delays. However, some airports seemed to have disproportionate numbers of delays: Barcelona El-Prat Airport, Paris Orly Airport, Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, and Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport all experienced fewer than 100 cancelled flights but more than 1,000 delayed flights."
