A British tourist was removed from a plane in Bali after turning up for a flight with a 'toy bomb'.

Davide Fogli, a graphic designer who was born in Turin, was questioned and then cleared by airport security over the item. He told officials he had bought the item at a toy store and had intended to take it to a New Year's Eve party.

However, after boarding the Qatar Airways flight bound for Doha with a female lawyer friend, he was removed from the plane.

The plane had taxied onto the tarmac and was preparing for takeoff when it was ordered to return to the terminal, reports the Daily Mail.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Trikora Harjo, the airport general manager, made the call after hearing about the incident.

He said: "This was a very realistic toy and in the current climate, we wanted to know more about his plans."

The flight left for Doha and Fogli was question by officials at the airport and then by police in Denpasar.

The couple was free to go 24 hours later and released from custody shortly before midnight on Monday.

Back in 2012, a passenger's bottle of aftershave sparked a terror alert at Edinburgh Airport after security officers thought it was a bomb.

The grenade-shaped bottle belonged to Jimmy Ho, 25, who was heading back to London Heathrow after a break in Scotland with friends.
