A taxi smashed into the departure hall at Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5 after the driver suffered a cardiac arrest at the wheel.

The driver, in his 60s, mounted the pavement in his Volkswagen people carrier before crashing through a barrier and hitting a tall glass window, reports Travel Mole.

He was taken to Hillingdon Hospital by ambulance, where he later sadly died at around 9pm on Monday night.

Speaking to the Independent, an airport spokeswoman said: "There was a road incident this morning and the emergency services were called.

"One lane of the departures forecourt was closed down and our services were not impacted."

ITV News reports that the London Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 5.23am to reports of a road traffic collision at Heathrow Airport.

"We sent a number of resources to the scene including an ambulance crew, a single responder and an advanced paramedic."

No other injuries were reported following the incident.
