The Great Exuma islands in the Bahamas are a popular holiday destination- but the area also holds a special place in the lives of astronauts.

Tidal channels existing near the remote chain of islands make it one of the easiest places on earth to recognise from space.

One particularly steady-handed member of the Expedition 44 crew took this stunning image of the waters while moving about in the International Space Station.

The Exuma district is made up of 365 islands spread over more than 190km of water.

The photo shows a swathe of blue water, differing in colour. The lighter patches represent the shallower areas while the darker patches are the deepest parts of the ocean.

Even though some very slight edits have been made, this is essentially exactly what Exuma looks like from space.

The Exuma islands have been the setting for not one but two James Bond films, and the islands are known for another unusual attraction... their swimming pigs.

The feral pigs can often be found paddling around in the crystal clear waters and even though no one knows for certain where the animals came from, rumours suggest the pigs survived a nearby shipwreck and made their way to the island where they still live to this day.
