A photographer managed to capture the unusual moment a seal decided to take a ride on a whale's back.

Robyn Malcolm snapping a pod of whales during a feeding frenzy around 300 miles south of Sydney, and only spotted the seal while going through the photos later on.

According to the BBC, in response to questions over whether the picture is real, Ms Malcolm said: "I'm positive, because I don't know how to use Photoshop. And I do still have it on the camera so I can prove it."

Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife whale expert Geoff Ross said, while rare, this kind of thing has been seen once before, adding: "The only other time was a seal trying to get away from a killer whale. The seal hopped on the back of the pectoral fins of a humpback whale."

It is the latest in a series of pictures that seem to have caught random animal piggybacks this year.

In July, a crow was spotted landing on an eagle's back in the skies over Washington.

In June, a raccoon appeared to be dicing with death as it seemed to have mistaken an alligator for a log in Florida.

And in March, a weasel was seen taking flight on a woodpecker's back while the bird was trying to fight it off in East London.
